Politics is not the subject we often talk about at the family dinner table. But last week, with much excitement, my family and I couldn’t help but talk about the possible reunification in the Korean Peninsula. North and South Korea are discussing plans to make a stunning announcement at the leaders’ summit next week: a permanent end to the 68-year state of war between the two. This is where I see a sign of resurrection in the world. Do you remember the unified Korean Women’s Hockey team and the march under the same flag at the Pyeongchang Olympics? Who knows. Maybe it all began with the unified team of North and South Korea at the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships in Chiba, Japan. As Nelson Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world….. to inspire…. To unite people.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the leaders, and also with the upcoming North Korea-United States summit in May.
2017 Easter Joint North-South Prayer
God of peace, Help us work together with one united mind,
To fulfill the dreams of unification.
Help us remember the days when the North and the South once were one, To better live into a world of harmony and peace.
God of life, In this season of resurrection where we await the signs of spring,
Help us see the hopes of new life, Sprouting in the cold barren land.
God of justice, In this land where Your glory awaits,
Let the rivers of justice flow, Bringing forth Your plans for us.
In Jesus name, the one who has defeated death and risen again, Amen
