Flying Teeth

1950s - Early 1960s

Whenever people my age get together someone always mentions this memory of Fort Garry United Church Sunday School. We were enthusiastically singing Onward Christian Soldiers when the leader opened his mouth and his teeth came flying out onto the floor. He didn’t miss a beat. He scooped them up, put them back in his mouth and continued singing. We were all amazed. At that age, we didn’t know about dentures.

We all used to love the Sunday School picnics, in the spring. At Fort Garry United Church, the kids would pile into buses that would take us to Assiniboine Park. We would sing songs the whole way. We would join our parents, at the park, for the picnic, play games and enjoy the playground, together, with children from other churches. At the end of the picnic, the kids would pile back on the buses and be driven back to the church and then we would walk home. My Dad was the superintendent at the time and when we got back to the church, he realized that one boy hadn’t come home on the bus. Dad checked with the other churches and found the boy. He had gotten on the wrong bus. So, my Dad, scooped up me and my sister and we went across the city to pick up the boy and bring him back home.
