Cream Cheese and Cherry Sandwiches

There have been many after church luncheons through the years. I started attending Fort Garry United Church in the 1970s. I remember them always being buns with a variety of toppings egg, ham, tuna, and salmon. My favourite were the ones with cream cheese and maraschino cherries. Through the years these have fallen out of favour, but they still show up on occasion. Sandwiches are served less often now with soup, chili, or salad being more popular. Pancakes around Shrove Tuesday are still a staple.

With COVID-19 and the switch to virtual Sunday services, there hasn’t been a luncheon in over a year. The last Sunday before the church closed Sandy Shwetz was ready to prepare lunch and the church fridge was full of ingredients. As things became more serious throughout the week the lunch was cancelled.

Missing these luncheons and the cream cheese and cherry buns I decided I would have to make them myself. Last Sunday our family had afternoon tea, with a variety of fancy sandwiches, including cream cheese and cherries.
