100 Years or 96 Years?

If the United Church didn't exist prior to 1925, what are we actually celebrating?  Was Fort Garry a formerly Presbyterian congregation formed in 1921 then changed to be a United Church in 1925?

The church held its first service in 1921 and was named United Church, Fort Garry.  It was formed mostly of Presbyterians and Methodists and was a mission church of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in Canada and their Co-operative Committee. One of the sponsoring churches was Augustine Presbyterian, now United. Augustine is the home of the Oak Table Outreach ministry, which many FGUC congregation members currently support in a variety of ways.  In 1925 United Church, Fort Garry entered the union that formed the United Church of Canada. Eventually, the name was officially changed to Fort Garry United Church.

For more about the beginnings of the church read the book, Fort Garry United Church, 1921-1971 Fiftieth Anniversary by Bertha Peterson and Rudolph Peterson, and explore the History section of the FGUC website.
