Musings from Marilyn
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Alice Wilton. She was one of my Mom’s Fort Garry United Church UCW ladies who kind of adopted me when my mom fell and became a quadriplegic. We met for lunch a few times a year after they quit being an active Unit. She was a lovely lady and I picked her up for church a couple of times before she stopped going. I think only Lois Johnson, Carol Lamb and Bev Jacobs are left from that group.
I don’t know if I knew Alice until Mom was in hospital, but I knew Carol Lamb and Lois Johnson as they lived on the next street and were a couple of people whose children I first babysat when I was a young teenager. Also knew Doris Foster, Ina Blackman and another lady I sometimes picked up to go to the Unit lunches at someone’s home or restaurant.
I remember the green tablecloths that were always on the tables for many many teas, and potluck dinners held at the church, that were made by Mom’s church Unit. She was an active member of one of the Women’s Units. I think my Mom, Jean Currie, probably bought the material as she was a sewer. She was also a music teacher who played piano for many different functions at the church.
I was confirmed at FGUC at age 13, went to Brownies at the church (Mom was leader), went thru all of CGIT 5 yrs at church, and taught Sunday School one year when I was around 17 or 18.
When I married for first time in 1966 there were several FGUC choir members who sang at least one number at Brian’s and my wedding. 15 years later in April 1981 when Doug and I married at FGUC there were 4 choir members who sang (Bev Jacobs, Ina Bachman, and two male choir members).
My connection to FGUC covers almost all my life, and memories are in abundance, including the building of the Christian Education Building!
