History of the Cookie Run
In 2006 the Fort Garry Woman's Group (previously known as Unit 7) was looking for a fund-raiser. Janice Hales had been talking to a friend of hers that was telling her about the successful Cook Walk they had at their church. Janice proposed the idea for our group, and it was adopted. Thus, the first Cookie Run (not Walk) was held on Dec 2, 2006.
Janie Badger, Janice Hales and Janet Ploen (known as the three J’s) headed up the committee. Ideas were gathered from other churches that had had successful walks and from our Woman's Group and a very successful Sale was held. Janie left the group after several years and Janice and Janet carried on organizing the Cookie Run till 2019. With COVID-19 there was no Cookie Run in 2020.
The Women in the Group were asked to donate 6 doz cookies and something for the specialty table. Knowing we would not have enough cookies we asked the congregation to help us out. We charged $5 for the box of cookies in the beginning and raised it to $8 over the years. Best bargain in town! Our first Cookie Run brought in a little over $1,000 and we were thrilled. As the popularity of the event grew, we made over $2,400 in 2019. With the money raised the Women’s Group helped buy the new robes for the Choir, card tables and chairs, kitchen supplies, handrail for the ramp outside, as well as donated to many Charities outside the church.
Once the pandemic is over the Women’s Group will have to make a decision as to whether to carry on with the Cookie Run. Many of our members are in assisted living accommodations and others do not bake anymore. If the Cookie Run continues after the pandemic it may have to become a Congregation Supported event.
